🧬 Oni-Felix LOUDS Bit-Packed Smart Tree & 64B SMTR Capsule (v10.8.0)
Smart Tree v10.8.0 implements the 8B-META-WP-v2.1 LOUDS (Level-Order Unary Degree Sequence) succinct tree representation (#[repr(C, align(64))] LoudsSmartTree), packing up to 63 tree nodes into 16 bytes (2N + 1 bits) of topology with $O(1)$ hardware POPCNT/TZCNT rank1/select1 navigation and a 64-byte cryptographically verified SMTR .m8 capsule (branchless IEEE 802.3 CRC32 + 8BIS seal):
# Emit the full 64-byte SMTR_CAPSULE_V2 with LOUDS bitvector, wave digest & node table
st --mode louds .
st --mode smtr-capsule ./src
# Compact single-line SHA-256 + LOUDS SMTR_V2 fingerprint for instant change detection

See the full v10.8.0 End-to-End Architectural Review for C4 diagrams, wire layout, and hot-path benchmarks.
Built-in code intelligence (disabled in v21.0.0)
The st symbol command and MCP symbol tool have been removed in v21.0.0 due to the removal of the CrabCC/tree-sitter dependency chain. Code intelligence features will return in a future release with a lighter-weight native implementation.
Opt-in Rink quantities and wave math
The rink MCP tool provides bounded offline external-Rink quantity conversions,
classical period/wavelength/beat calculations, and explicitly opted-in durable
MEM8 provenance. No Rink binary or unit database is bundled. See the
operator setup, license boundary, and limitations.
Remember a forge into MEM8
st remember ingests a local checkout or a GitHub/GitLab/Forgejo-style URL into a native MEM8 store. It keeps code excerpts and thoughts (READMEs, comments, and attached review notes) with provenance. --level is extreme, professor, expert, high, medium, low, or bullshitter. StandardGalactic is the full-nexus exception; other extreme requests fall back rather than swallowing an unbounded source.
st remember /data/standardgalactic --level extreme
st remember 'https://github.com/standardgalactic' --check
st remember /data/standardgalactic --check -q spherepop
--check (aliases --status and --recall) reads the existing store and does not walk the collection again. Repeated remembers skip unchanged git HEAD identities unless --force is set. Writes are buffered and flushed once before the run is acknowledged.
Repository hub
8s.is hosts Git archives, opt-in semantic recall with source
citations, and Smart Tree feedback. i1.is remains the quick universal
installer. The hub keeps exact text in compressed token records and semantic memory
in native MEM8, with persistent indexes across restarts. See the
public API and operator guide.
Smart Tree now includes an interactive menu for easy access to all features:
# Launch interactive setup menu (MCP setup, health checks, etc.)
./scripts/interactive_setup.sh
# Or use the developer menu
./scripts/manage.sh menu
# Run client menu for quick access to different modes
./scripts/manage.sh client
Client Menu Options:
- 🌳 Basic Tree View - Classic directory visualization
- 🌶️ Spicy TUI - Interactive file browser with fuzzy search
- 🧠 Terminal Interface - Full terminal with AI context
- 📊 Web Dashboard - Browser-based file explorer
- 🚀 HTTP Daemon - MCP + LLM Proxy + The Custodian
- 🔧 MCP Server - Model Context Protocol (stdio)
- 🌊 Custom Command - Enter any st command
The menu makes it easy to explore Smart Tree’s features without memorizing commands!
MCP discovery paths and pagination
Use a real directory path with overview; missing paths and regular files return
an error rather than an empty project summary. A missing or disallowed path does
not replace the session’s remembered directory. Relative paths on the next call
still resolve against the last valid directory. File-creation targets may still
refer to paths that do not exist yet.
find forwards limit and offset through its code, config, documentation,
tests, build, large, recent, and timespan searches, as well as ordinary file and
project discovery. For example, request {"type":"code","path":"/my/project", "limit":20,"offset":0}, then advance the offset by the returned found count.
File-search responses retain total_count, offset, and limit_applied; counts
follow the server’s decimal/hexadecimal setting. Pagination counts returned
entries, including parent directories retained by the scanner, not only files.
An offset beyond the last entry returns an empty page. Keep pages small enough
for the response-size cap and use an unchanged tree when paging.
🛡️ Security: Audit Your MCP Integrations
Security scanner detects supply chain attacks targeting AI assistants.
st --cleanup # Scan and remove malicious MCP servers, hooks, and hidden directories
st --cleanup -y # Non-interactive cleanup (auto-confirm)
st --security-scan . # Scan codebase for attack patterns (IPFS injection, fake verification)
st --mode markdown . # Report includes Concerning Files from the tree scan
st --cert-scan ./assets # Inspect PEM bundles and DER certificates embedded in files
st --cert-scan ./assets --mode json # Machine-readable certificate inventory
Certificate scans report subjects, issuers, serials, SHA-256 fingerprints, validity
dates, alternative names, and file offsets. They inspect metadata without verifying
signatures, chain trust, or revocation. Malformed PEM blocks and skipped files are
reported explicitly. The configured file-size limit and symlink policy apply.
The daemon saves the latest integrity and certificate scan for each target in
compressed token records. --no-daemon scans locally. See
certificate scanning and daemon scan memory for
coverage, storage format, and HTTP examples.
Why this matters: Some npm packages install MCP servers that phone home to external endpoints, fetch mutable content via IPFS/IPNS, and can inject behavioral modifications into your AI sessions. These supply chain attacks are difficult to detect because they:
- Use fake cryptographic verification (checking signature length, not actual signatures)
- Never fail - silently accept whatever content is served
- Run automatically via Claude Code hooks
- Hide malicious directories (
.claude-flow, .pattern-cache, .seraphine)
- Use mutable IPNS addresses that can change content remotely
Enhanced Detection (v6.5.4+):
- 🔍 13 Attack Patterns including IPFS/IPNS gateways, fake verification, bootstrap registries
- 🎯 7 Known Malicious Packages (claude-flow, agentic-flow, hive-mind, flow-nexus, ruv-swarm, superdisco, agent-booster)
- 🌐 6 IPFS Gateways (ipfs.io, dweb.link, cloudflare-ipfs.com, gateway.pinata.cloud, w3s.link, 4everland.io)
- 📦 Volatile npm Tags (@alpha, @beta, @latest, @next, @canary)
- 🪝 Auto-Execution Hooks (PreToolUse, PostToolUse, SessionStart, UserPromptSubmit)
- 🏗️ Genesis Registry & Fallback CID generation detection
Important: Cleaning your settings only helps if you don’t reinstall the untrusted package. If you run npx <package> or npm install <package> again, it may re-add itself to your Claude Code configuration.
Best practices:
- Audit your
~/.claude/settings.json regularly
- Be cautious of MCP servers that contact external endpoints
- Prefer locally-built tools (like Smart Tree) over npm-fetched ones
- Check what hooks are configured:
st --hooks-config status
- Run
st --cleanup after installing any new AI packages

🧠 ST Daemon - Always-On AI Context
Smart Tree now runs as a two-product system:
st - Fast CLI that auto-starts the daemon when needed
std - The daemon (always-on, binary protocol, shared memory)
st . # Auto-starts daemon if not running
st . --no-daemon # Run standalone (no daemon)
# Manual daemon control
std start # Start daemon
std stop # Stop daemon
std status # Check status
st --recall "document with my daughter last week" # Search saved context (JSON)
Benefits:
- Shared Memory: Context persists across CLI invocations
- Fast Protocol: Binary wire protocol (control ASCII 0x00-0x1F as opcodes)
- LLM Ready: SSE/HTTP endpoints for AI assistant connections
- Unix Socket:
/run/user/$UID/st.sock for local IPC
Conversation history and directory context persist in native MEM8/RAW8 blocks.
The daemon restores saved watches and updates changed files; queries read the
persisted index without rescanning. File facts use compact dictionary-token
records. /context/remember records people, notes, and time, and /context/recall
returns matching files with evidence. See persistent context search
for API examples, migration, storage details, and current retrieval coverage.
For LLMs:
The daemon exposes endpoints for AI assistants to connect:
- Unix socket for CLI (binary protocol)
- HTTP on port 28428 for web/SSE
- Memory verbs: REMEMBER, RECALL, FORGET, M8_WAVE
💡 Smart Tips System
Smart Tree now shows helpful tips at the top of the output!
st --tips off # Disable tips
st --tips on # Re-enable tips
- Tips appear on first run, then randomly every 10-20 runs
- Detects cool terminals (256color, iTerm, Alacritty, etc.) for fancy formatting
- State persisted in
~/.st/tips_state.json

🪟 Windows-Specific Notes
Path Handling
Smart Tree automatically handles Windows path separators (\ vs /):
- Uses Rust’s
PathBuf for cross-platform compatibility
- Automatically detects and handles UNC paths (
\\server\share)
- Supports both forward slashes and backslashes in arguments
File System Features
- NTFS Support: Full support for NTFS file systems
- Symlinks: Windows symlinks require admin privileges to create, but Smart Tree can read them without admin rights
- Case Sensitivity: Respects NTFS case-insensitivity settings
- File Locking: Handles Windows file locking gracefully
PowerShell Integration
Smart Tree works seamlessly in PowerShell:
# Basic usage
st .
# Pipe to other PowerShell commands
st --mode json . | ConvertFrom-Json
# Set aliases in your PowerShell profile
Set-Alias tree st
# Environment variables
$env:ST_COLOR = "always"
$env:ST_DEFAULT_DEPTH = 5
Add to your PowerShell Profile ($PROFILE):
# Smart Tree aliases and functions
Set-Alias tree st
function st-ai { st --mode ai --compress $args }
function st-search { param($pattern) st --search $pattern . }
Windows Terminal Tips
For the best experience in Windows Terminal:
-
Enable Unicode/UTF-8:
- Open Settings (Ctrl+,)
- Defaults → Additional settings → Use new text renderer
- Enable “Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support”
-
Install a Nerd Font:
# Using Scoop
scoop bucket add nerd-fonts
scoop install CascadiaCode-NF
# Or download manually from:
-
Enable Color Support:
Smart Tree auto-detects Windows Terminal and enables full color support
Known Windows Limitations
- Performance: Slightly slower on Windows due to filesystem differences (still 10x faster than alternatives!)
- Emoji Support: Requires Windows 10+ and a compatible font
- Admin Rights: Not required for normal operations
- Long Paths: Automatically handles Windows long path limitations (> 260 characters)
Troubleshooting
Problem: “st is not recognized as a command”
Problem: Colors not showing in cmd.exe
Problem: Emojis show as boxes
- Solution: Install a font with emoji support (Cascadia Code, Segoe UI Emoji)
Problem: Permission denied errors
- Solution: Smart Tree doesn’t require admin rights. If you see permission errors, you’re accessing protected system files. Use
--skip-permission-errors flag
Problem: Building from source fails
Problem: Slow performance
- Solution: Exclude antivirus scanning for the st.exe binary and your development directories

Checking and installing updates
Normal CLI startup checks the i1 release catalogue at most once per 24 hours and
prints a notice when a newer version is available. It does not install updates
automatically; MCP mode skips this startup check. Use st --no-update-check to
skip the startup check.
Run st --update interactively to check the catalogue and, after confirmation,
download and checksum-verify the binary archive for your platform. The release
catalogue must contain matching published binaries; a Git push or version bump
alone does not publish an installable update. An already-running daemon also
needs to be restarted after its binary is updated.
Automatic daemon updates (opt-in, macOS and Linux)
Smart Tree 10.1 adds a separate OS-managed updater. After installing all four
binaries (st, std, m8, n8x) from a tested build, enable it with:
sudo bash scripts/install-auto-update.sh enable
sudo bash scripts/install-auto-update.sh status
sudo bash scripts/install-auto-update.sh disable
The script supports the managed macOS installation in
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/is.8b.smart-tree with its existing daemon/token
configuration, and Linux’s /usr/local/bin/st managed daemon with a root-owned
/var/lib/smart-tree/daemon.token. Other installation layouts fail closed.
Linux DynamicUser token layouts and Windows are not supported by this installer.
The network daemon does not gain an update endpoint or permission to accept
remote update commands.
A root-owned worker checks the stable i1 catalogue daily, including after boot.
It never downgrades, installs prereleases, or builds code. Missing platform
artifacts leave the current daemon alone. Downloads require HTTPS on i1.is,
no redirects, and the catalogue’s SHA-256 digest; this trusts the release server
and is not independent signature verification. Both compressed and expanded
bundles are bounded to 512 MiB. All four binaries must be regular archive files;
links, duplicate names, traversal, and unexpected members are rejected.
Before installing, the worker verifies the running authenticated local daemon,
checks candidate executables, and saves a durable rollback journal. Each binary
is replaced by rename, then the service is restarted and its authenticated
/info version checked. A failed restart restores the previous bundle. An
interrupted transaction is recovered on the next worker invocation. The bundle
is not switched atomically as a whole; the independent worker and journal make
partial replacement recoverable. Existing sessions may disconnect briefly on
restart. Tokens, settings, memory, and watched directories are preserved.
The worker is installed separately from st, so a failed update cannot replace
the recovery controller. Re-run the installer after reviewing a new updater
implementation to upgrade that controller. Concurrent scheduled workers are
locked out; interactive st --update refuses while managed updates are enabled.
Failed release digests are held in .auto-update/rejected-digest until a different
release appears (an administrator can remove that marker after investigation).
Status is recorded in .auto-update/last-success; macOS logs go to
/var/log/smart-tree-updater.log, Linux logs to the service journal. Disabling
updates leaves the daemon and its data in place. Future updates only become
available when a validated, platform-compatible release is promoted to i1.
